Metric units of volume review (L and mL)

Review the size of liters and milliliters and how to convert between the two.  Then, try some practice problems.

Metric units of volume

Volume measures capacity. For example, the volume of a bowl is the amount of space inside the bowl or how much water, for example it would take to fill the bowl.
In the metric system of measurement, the most common units of volume are milliliters and liters.

How big is a milliliter?

A single raindrop contains about 11 milliliter of liquid:

Converting liters to milliliters

1 liter=1000 milliliters\blueD{1} \text{ liter} = \greenD{1000}\text{ milliliters}
To convert  liters\text{ liters} to milliliters\text{milliliters} we multiply the number of liters\text{liters} by 1,000\greenD{1,000}.
Eksempel:
8 liter=8×1000=8000 milliliter\blueD{8} \text{ liter} = \blueD{8}\times \greenD{1000}=\blueD{8}\greenD{000}\text{ milliliter}

Converting milliliters to liters

1 milliliter=11000 liter\pink{1} \text{ milliliter} = \dfrac1{\green{1000}}\text{ liter}
To convert milliliters\text{milliliters} to liters\text{liters} we divide the number of milliliters\text{milliliters} by 1,000\greenD{1,000}.
Eksempel:
45 mL=451000=45÷1000=0.045 L\pink{45} \text{ mL}= \dfrac{\pink{45}}{\green{1000}} = \pink{45}\div\green{1000}=\blue{0.045}\text{ L}
